Commentary From The Cedar Lounge Revolution

19th September 2016

This document from the Labour Party, published for their National Conference is 70 pages long. It provides a comprehensive overview of that party at that point in time. Divided into nine sections it addresses a range of issues, from the party structures, the Parliamentary party, the EU elections of the following year, local elections the following year, by-elections the following year, finance and accounts, international affairs, a development plan for the party covering the years 1993-1995 and finally obituaries.

The cover is particularly striking, a painting of Nelson Mandela leaving prison by Mohamed M. Patel which the report notes was presented to Head Office by the artist in 1993.

Much of the text, particularly that relating to party organisations, simply outlines events and future plans. As an overview of those involved in the party it is useful, noting for example the Labour Lawyer’s Group, or the Trade Union Group.

The report is of particular interest because it straddles the time between the first Fianna Fáil/Labour coalition government (the ‘Partnership Government’) and its Fine Gael/Labour/Democratic Left successor (the ‘Government of Renewal’). Interestingly it suggests that:

The greatest achievement of the Party in Government since the last Conference was the central role we have played, in the person of the Party Leader, Tanaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dick Spring TD in the Peace Process. Now firmly established, this process which ended 25 year of bloodshed in Northern Ireland, The Republic, Britain and even on Continental Europe will go down as the major historical achievement of the period.

Funny, a reading of the history suggests that it was Reynolds who (south of the border) deserves the actual credit here on the politician side.

Does this mean that they also accept their ‘central role’ in Bomber Bruton subsequently dynamiting the whole thing?
