About

The Second International was an organisation of socialist and labour parties formed in Paris in 1889. It dissolved during the First World War, but attempts were made to reform it in 1920. This led briefly to two successors, the International Working Union of Socialist Parties (IWUSP, or the 2½ International) and the International Socialist Commission (or Berne International), but these merged in 1923 to create the Labour and Socialist International.

From Ireland, James Connolly’s Irish Socialist Republican Party sent three delegates to the 1900 conference.
