About

The Workers’ League was established as the League for a Workers Vanguard following a split in the League for a Workers Republic (LWR) (affiliated to the International committee of the Fourth International (ICFI)) which saw members support either the Socialist Labour League (SLI) in Britain or the International Communist Organisation (OCI) in France.

The majority of the LWR supported the OCI but those in the minority founded the League for a Workers Vanguard. In 1972 following a further split in the ICFI the LWV became the Workers league. Jack O’Connor, later of SIPTU and President of the ICTU, was a leading member. The organisation went into decline and was inactive by the late 1970s. Periodicials produced by it included Marxist Journal, The Workers’ Press and News Line (the latter two printed in Britain).
